In her formative years, an artistic uncle encouraged Dietje Hagedoorn to enroll in a metalsmithing program in Schoonhoven, Netherlands. Thus began her life-long passion for the craft that she has since mastered, and practices from her home studio in the peaceful village of Radium Hot Springs. Dietje moved to Vancouver to complete her apprenticeship and stayed on, drawn to the active and growing goldsmithing community in the city at that time. She had extensive training while working for such notable jewellers as Swedish, Ragnar, and Brinkhaus, and finally ventured out on her own in 1980. Forge & Form, an innovative open studio/retail jewellery shop on Granville Island, was the culmination of Dietje’s experience before moving to Alberta in 2003, and Radium in 2009.

As an artist it is always a wonderful relief to find a reliable and honest gallery that will expose one’s work. The Avenue Gallery has, in my two year experience with it, been an absolute pleasure to deal with. Heather, Kathleen, Catherine, Barb, Carol-Ann and Claire have been very clear and prompt with their communication. Every time a piece sold I would get a cheerful message that a sale was made and the client was pleased! Payment is always on time and I am kept up-to-date with what their clientele is looking for or not. Although I have not been to the gallery in person yet, due to the large distance between us, I have absolute faith in their abilities as gallery owner and staff! – Dietje Hagedoorn
