BRUCE EDMUNDSON

Ova
Vancouver Island Big Leaf Maple Burl, Granite base, 27 x 17 x 7
$1500
In some contexts, Ova represent new beginnings and potential. Carving burls is all about bringing to life that which resides in the wood and exposing its potential, thus Ova is an organic outcome of that process. – Bruce Edmundson
Galaxy
Vancouver Island Big Leaf Maple Burl, Granite base 9.5 x 14 x 9
$450
A galaxy is “a vast collection of stars, gas, and dust, typically 10,000 to 100,000 light-years in diameter and containing billions of stars” (from galaxias kuklos, Greek for “circle of milk,” originally used to describe our own Milky Way). Galaxies may be spiral (with one or more spiral-shaped arms), elliptical (shaped more like fuzzy footballs with no distinguishing features), or irregular (chaotic in appearance).
The above, to my eye, is what I see in this burl. It is a galaxy compressed into an ornament, if you will, demonstrating how the magnificence of outer space can be demonstrated and represented by the simplicity and beauty of the nature that is readily available. – Bruce Edmundson
