The desire to create art has been with me for as long as I can remember. It satisfies a kind of primal urge to construct. The winding of the figures, for me, is a very intimate experience. It is where I try to translate the emotion or movement of the piece. My inspiration has always come from personal experience. During my working years in health care, I have been witness to turbulence and tenderness. My sculptural work represents these moments. It is a sort of communication that I find hard to put into words; they are, for me, small windows into shared experiences. – Janis Woode
Oil on linen 32 x 40
I often look out the window of my studio and see clouds doing impossible things against the backdrop of Cyprus Mountain. It must be at least 40 miles away. I’ve always thought it strange we can visualize such spectacular perspectives and hardly give it a second thought. These recent paintings play with the physics of describing distance but it’s not meant to be too deep, just fun. – Philip Mix

Seeing my subject come to life kindles deeper interest as my work on a painting progresses, while I can lose interest in subjects that lack that intimate appeal and vitality. I love to pursue the lively idiosyncrasies in organic subjects, and birds in particular allow me to infuse some life and personality, while exploring a wonderful array of shapes, colours and textures. In western traditions, birds are associated most often with hope, hidden strength and divine intervention. I’ve learned the humble and charming everyday sparrow, as depicted in Morning Glow is often symbolic of diligence, productivity and creativity, what every artist aspires to! Personally, birds bring much joy and animation to our yard. The finch feeder we added at the start of Covid has put on a great show, connecting us with the outdoors and wider world even when our routines did not. My husband, working at home for the first time, was soon beguiled by the antics of our colourful visitors and my morning coffee is routinely enjoyed by the window, delighting in the garden and the wildlife. – Jennifer Heine

This pandemic has hit us all very hard. With all the stores closed for in-person shopping, many of us had to resort to the use of the Internet and that proved to be very difficult, especially if you were looking for something very special to impress your wife on her birthday. Cue in The Avenue Gallery with their fantastic personnel (I am looking at you, Kathleen and Heather) that is so knowledgeable, helpful and ready to assist you in any way they can. My wife’s present arrived in perfect condition and super fast. Even though it was a very delicate glass piece whose transportation made me very nervous, it came in so well packaged that nothing happened to it. Did I mention the gift wrapping? Oh yeah, the best I’ve seen in my life. The way the beautiful bow on top of the gift box was preserved deserves the Nobel Prize for ingenuity. Thank you Kathleen and Heather. We shall be forever in your debt. I promise that one day we will come by to visit you and will thank you in person.
