JANIS WOODE

Hindsight is 2020 by Janis Woode at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Hindsight is 2020
Plate Steel, Wrapped Copper Wire 15.5 x 4 x 12
$3700

In looking back on the year 2020, one thing comes to mind, aren’t we all so glad to put it behind us. All of the inconveniences, rules and regulations. A year of face masks, hand sanitizer, social distancing and self isolation. Oh and of course, complaining. But like any bad vacation, I have a feeling when we reminisce about the terrible year Covid hit, there will be stories of how crazy it was in the beginning and how we managed to navigate an unprecedented time in history. There will be stories of losing loved ones and that will be hard.

I know we aren’t out of the woods just yet, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. It has been a year of learning, for sure. May we never again take our visits for granted and may we once again hug until the cows come home. – Janis Woode

Roundabout by Janis Woode at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Roundabout
Leaf Spring, Brass Bearing, Antique Handmade Clamp, Plate Steel, Wrapped Copper Wire 10.5 x 4.25 x 26
$3600

During the making of Roundabout, I was contemplating the supportive human relationship. It seems to me that friends, family and loved ones in general do their best to support each other in times of need. At least I like to think so. Sometimes the road is bumpy, and we wonder if we are even going in the right direction.

Having a friend along for the ride is sometimes all that is required. I have heard it said that it is not the destination but the journey that is important. Time for a road trip! – Janis Woode

WILLIAM LIAO

Blaze
Acrylic on canvas 36 x 36
$4300

I have heard one of the most beautiful proverbs, “What you do in March and April, you will gain in July and August.” This is how it is now. After the long winter, everything starts again, and the hot summer will finally come. We are full of expectations and patiently waiting, after the time has passed, the seasons will give us an answer. – William Liao

Dreamscape #8
Acrylic on canvas 30 x 24
$2600

In the evening, I walked out of the house and felt a trace of vitality in the white noise of the city. The wind had stopped, and the rain had just left. The city had become very clean. Stars were faintly visible in the sky. It was a rare good time in the year. – William Liao

Only when we keep searching in our memory do we get salvation. Every section of the road we have walked has been hidden by signposts to guide the future.  – William Liao

Rhythm of the Rain by William Liao at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Rhythm of Rain
Acrylic on canvas 24 x 24
$2200

Recently I opened a certain recording, it was rain I heard a long time ago. Where was I then? I forgot a little, it seemed that I accidentally pressed the record button, and a patter of rain remained in my phone. That period of rain is like a signal in the wilderness of life. It reminds me at any time that even if the world is empty, we are not alone. The heavy rain does not promise the four seasons, but they will still come. We can forget it, we can ignore it, but it just exists. – William Liao

Patience by Bruce Edmundson at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary gallery in Victoria BC., Canada

Patience
Salt Spring Island Big Leaf Maple burl, Artisan Granite Base 19 x 10
$1050

Patience is inspired by the poise and tolerance so routinely displayed by those within society presented with events that would exasperate the best of us. I wanted to capture something of the grace and strength oft arising out of painful and trying circumstances. – Bruce Edmundson
