Anna’s Hummingbird by Tanya Bone
“Anna’s Hummingbirds are said to be more like flying jewellery than birds. The highly saturated colors of these birds and the petunias planted to attract them is what inspired me to create this piece. We plant bright shade Petunia varieties which bloom from spring throughout the summer to attract birds to our gardens; and sure enough, Anna’s Hummingbirds arrive. Sadly, these beautiful birds are now also appearing in the winter; another warning sign of the impact of climate change. In 2017 Vancouver city residents voted to elect Anna’s Hummingbird as their official city bird in hopes to symbolize the importance of birds in our ecosystem, and to continue to build awareness of birds in the city. I hope my painting, Anna’s Hummingbird, will do the same.” – Tanya Bone
