“Fractured Light I is one of my all-time favourites and marked a real shift in my work. I usually begin with a photograph, and in this piece, I moved beyond that starting point by working into the surface with paint and oil sticks, disrupting the original forms until a new way of seeing emerged. Traces of the earlier image remain beneath the surface, allowing the landscape to unfold in layered and expressive ways. The scene itself becomes secondary to what I am trying to convey, the movement of light, the presence of wind and the feeling of being there. What I discovered in this painting...
