Fall Splendor by Mary-Jean Butler

“We had been boating around Saltspring and Galiano, before arriving at Wallace Island. It was our first time exploring this beautiful Marine Park.

The majesty of the arbutus trees on Wallace Island provided inspiration for the painting ‘Fall Splendor’. I was so impressed by the scale of this particular grove of trees, as they took center stage towering above the evergreens. The deep, almost shadow-like quality of the firs and cedar provided a background for the earthy reds and oranges of the arbutus to shine. This area of the island really felt like iconic West Coast scenery to me, with the rocky shoreline, sparkling cove, and arbutus grove set against the forest. It was one of those magical west coast fall days, with a slight chill in the air as the colours start to change.” – Mary-Jean Butler
