Shell Cooper is a South African-born abstract painter based in British Columbia, whose practice is shaped by time spent between Canada and Costa Rica.

With formal studies in Interior Design, Economics, and Psychology, Cooper creates large-scale works that explore the intersection of memory, landscape, and the human experience. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, her paintings emerge through an intuitive process of layering, mark-making, and colour exploration. While rooted in botanical forms and remembered landscapes, her work is ultimately concerned with the emotional terrain of being human. Themes of hope, joy, doubt, resilience, wonder, and loss are embedded within each composition, creating spaces that invite personal reflection and connection. Artist Statement:
My paintings begin with an emotional response to landscape rather than a direct observation of it. Drawing from the coastal environments of British Columbia, the tropical vegetation of Costa Rica, and memories of my South African origins, I create layered abstract works that exist between botanical forms and remembered places.

At the heart of my practice is an exploration of the human condition. Themes of hope, joy, uncertainty, resilience, wonder, and loss are woven into each painting, with nature serving as both subject and metaphor.

Working intuitively, I build surfaces through colour, gesture, and texture, allowing each piece to evolve organically. The resulting works are not depictions of nature, but reflections on memory, place, and the shared emotions that connect us.
