Description

Artifact by Bruce Edmundson

“In history and anthropology, an artifact is a portable object crafted or altered by human hands, such as ancient tools or jewelry.

In scientific and medical contexts, an artifact is an artificial or unnatural feature that appears in an observation or sample due to the testing process, rather than being a natural characteristic of the subject, such as a dark spot on an x-ray or an unusual wave on an ECG.

In digital media, an artifact is a noticeable flaw, distortion, or error introduced into a file by the technology, such as colour bleeding in JPEG images or a glitch in an audio recording.

I think this sculpture meets all three definitions: it was created by a human, has several unnatural features introduced by the diseased burl wood, and has several “flaws” when set against a perfect specimen of maple timber.

Thus, this is my artifact.” – Bruce Edmundson
