Rise Up by Mary-Jean Butler
I am always drawn to the organic shape of Arbutus trees, and find them very inspiring to paint. This particular tree has such elegance in its form. I was intrigued by the contrast of shape and texture; the spiral twist in the trunk exposed a fine linear pattern beneath the split bark. I wanted the detail to rest on the arbutus tree, so the ocean is deliberately painted in a quieter and muted tone. – Mary-Jean Butler
