INTRODUCING – JANIS WOODE

Curiosity by Janis Woode at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Curiosity
Wrapped copper wire, steel, patina 25.5″ x 7″ x 5″
$2800

My old cat Zephyr has to be one of the most curious cats I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. If I’m in the kitchen, he wants to be on top of the fridge. If I’m in the bathroom, he wants to be in the cupboards. If I pop into the crawl space under the house, he’s there with bells on. Ever curious, even at the ripe old age of 16. Recently, he has decided that my car is worth a little snoop around, but if asked if he’d like to go for a ride to the vet, he’s gone in a shot. – Janis Woode

Spring Fox by Janis Woode at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Spring Fox
Truck leaf spring, wood, wrapped copper wire, patina 10″ x 22″ x 2.75″
$2800

Often in my work I will incorporate old pieces of metal that I have picked up from various places. Junk yards, recycle stations and thrift stores are a few favourites. This old leaf spring and its irresistible curves grabbed my eye one day while cruising our local metal recycle station. Reconfigured and cleaned up, it made perfect sense that it should support something, or someone, leaping upward. Both the fox and the leaf spring share the quality of tenacity and, in fact, rely on that quality for their very survival. A parallel that unites them. – Janis Woode

Fault Line by Janis Woode at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Fault Line
Wrapped copper wire, reclaimed steel, patina 53 x 2
$3000

Are we vulnerable living on a fault line? I suppose so. Having lived on the west coast my entire life the thought of the big one pops in and out of mind from time to time. We can prepare as best we can and hope for the best. To choose to live here speaks to the beauty of this place. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

INTRODUCING – DEIRA GERRITSEN

Twig Necklace by Deira Gerritsen at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Twig Necklace
Cyber Silver 18″ – 19.5″ length (adjustable)
$495

Deira Gerritsen designs jewelry that is as metaphysical as it is edgy, connecting the wearer to their emotions, grace, strength and sense of humour. Deira works exclusively with a specialized material she calls Cyber Silver. Sustainably-farmed coral is mixed with resin to allow for shaping. This shaped bead is then soaked in .925 sterling silver and finished with 4 coatings of .925 sterling sprayed on at a high velocity, giving it a lustrous shine.

PHILIP MIX

Beneath A Cedar by Philip Mix at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Beneath A Cedar
Charcoal and oil on linen 22 x 28
$1850

Drawing reveals the integrity of discipline, and the fragile brittleness of personal expression. It is a good place to return when lassitude threatens, a sublime and private portal to renewal. – Philip Mix

Oaks on a Bluff by Philip Mix at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

INTRODUCING – VANCE THEORET

If I Can Fly (front) by Vance Theoret at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada

If I Could Fly, edition 11 of 30
Bronze 9 x 8
$1600

Vance carves a variety of subjects, but bears are by far his favourite: “Bears are like big kids that never really grow up. So I can get away with portraying a lot of human qualities in them.” – Vance Theoret

So Wise by Vance Theoret at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada

So Wise
Brazilian Soapstone 11 x 9
$1000

I like to let the stone tell me what it wants to be… when I do this the end product is so much more alive than if I had forced my design upon it! Doing this also allows the stone to work with you and puts colours and patterns in places that you couldn’t plan any better… Although I take my work seriously, I try not to take myself too seriously… so much of my work has a light playfulness about it! – Vance Theoret

Cheers Big Ears by Vance Theoret at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada

$700
