The Willow at Transfer Beach by Lorna Dockstader at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

The Willow at Transfer Beach by Lorna Dockstader

Acrylic on canvas 24 x 48

$2890

When walking through parks or forests, I like to observe the diversity of the species of trees that have been planted. I think of the people who placed them there, and then think of my family and friends. Each of them is so unique, have interesting shapes, and personalities, all in different stages of growth. The willow in the park appears to be the oldest, wisest and most steadfast of them all.

One Fine Morning by Gaye Adams at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

One Fine Morning by Gaye Adams

Oil on canvas 36 x 36

$4300

This painting springs out of a personal experience of early morning canoeing in Lemmens inlet, located nine kilometres off Tofino. The early mornings are so often when the sea is her most still, serene self. It is a calming and peaceful place for me, which I hope to have conveyed to the viewer. – Gaye Adams

Sunlit Surge by Gaye Adams at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Sunlit Surge by Gaye Adams

Oil on canvas 36 x 48

$5100

This painting is yet another foray into capturing the dynamic energy of the ocean in paint and combining it with my love of interesting light. I have sat many hours painting the moving ocean on location and am now exploring larger paintings in the studio. It is both humbling and rewarding to attempt to do justice to the beauty of our coastline. This particular painting is not a particular place; it sprung from the memory of many such places along our coast. – Gaye Adams

Postcard Perfect by Philip Mix at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Postcard Perfect by Philip Mix

Oil on linen 30 x 24

$2700

If I were asked to put my finger on one thing that makes the pacific coast so unique, my answer would be atmosphere. From the misty shroud of an October fog to the pastel salmon oranges of a summer sunset, there is rarely a day the sky doesn’t display a mysterious harmony with its ocean twin. I love it when an artwork reduces itself to a singular essential expression; the noise of the day vanishes, breath becomes fuller and a restful, quiet thank you is the only thing left to say.

– Philip Mix

Church in the Woods, Cortes Island by Rob Elphinstone at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Church in the Woods, Cortes Island by Rob Elphinstone

Oil on canvas 30 x 24

$2050

Some of my favourite paintings are those that evoke emotion such as the churches by van Gogh, E. J Hughes and, of course, Emily Carr’s ‘Indian Church’ or as it is now known, ‘Church at Yuquot Village’. A church on Cortes Island is the subject of my piece set in an Emily Carr style woods. – Rob Elphinstone

Nootka Lighthouse, Yuquot by Rob Elphinstone at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Nootka Lighthouse, Yuquot by Rob Elphinstone

Oil on canvas 40 x 30

$3250

Emily Carr used the church nearby this lighthouse as a model for her ‘Church at Yuquot Village’. The lighthouse itself is built near where James Cook made the first European landing in British Columbia. The surrounding area of Friendly Cove is an incredible place to see. After seeing Cézanne’s views of Gardanne, I wanted to use his compositions in some way and chose the lighthouse as my subject.

Brady Stack Sunset by Brent Lynch

Oil on canvas 24 x 36

$6500

This painting was a demonstration at the Federation of Canadian Artists’ Bamfield Plein Air Retreat this last September. As one of the instructors, we put on an exhibition for the students. It was based on a field sketch done the day before when I took my group to Brady Beach. The stack lit up like a lighthouse as the last of the evening light slipped away. – Brent Lynch

Wind Over Chesterman (Field Study) by Brent Lynch

I took a trip to Tofino early in the spring and painted this field study ‘Wind Over Chesterman’ on a very stormy and haunting day. – Brent Lynch

The inspiration for ‘Our Place’ is the comfort in finding that special spot of refuge that offers a sense of calm and renewal. – Mary-Jean Butler

Beacon I by Mary-Jean Butler at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Beacon I by Mary-Jean Butler

Oil on canvas 12 x 24

$1100

This painting explores the coastline around Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver – the afternoon light had shifted and bathed the rocky bluff in deep oranges and reds. The ocean and sky both felt unsettled as if a storm was approaching.
