Julia grew up and still lives in a small prairie town nestled in the foothills of southern Alberta. Her aesthetic, based on the simplicity of light and form, is derived from this environment of crisp prairie light, gentle hills and windswept grasslands.

Recognized for her original design and meticulous craftsmanship, Julia has collected a multitude of awards and scholarships in Canada, and was also the Artist in Residence at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.  Mist & Light by Philip Mix at The Avenue Gallery, a contemporary fine art gallery in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Mist & Light

Oil on linen 28 x 22

It has been noted that some artists return to familiar themes in the maturing years of their work.

In 1985 I produced a series of collages, each a sort of tone poem of ocean atmospheres, eloquent in muted contrast, stippled surface and mirage-like shapes. It was only the other day I realized that these new works of 2018 were very much a revisiting of those ideas: colours intentionally soft and harmonic, layered composition and simplified design, all with the purpose of evoking reminiscent emotion.

It is my hope these paintings draw you into the wash of an ocean breeze, breathe in the fresh saltiness of our Pacific paradise, and dream of travels then, now and tomorrow. -Philip Mix
