Description

Flame by Steven Stairs

“Slow growing, generally small to medium size trees, pacific yew is a wood full of surprises. The grain can go in several directions at once and there are often knots and pockets of bark where least expected. These challenges make successfully working a piece through the process to finished sculpture that much more rewarding. Referred to by some as the ‘cognac’ of wood, yew polishes beautifully and finishes a magnificent warm glowing orange. This particular yew trunk came from a small mill in the Cowichan Valley. At 16″- 18” dia., and after counting growth rings, I estimate this tree was approximately 300 years old.  From a small clay model Flame evolved, the wood suggesting changes along the way, making the finished sculpture a more interesting piece.” – Steven Stairs
