The Artists

Skeet, Joan

Skeet, Joan

Painting in the genre of Contemporary Abstract Expressionism Joan Skeet’s work removes itself from the expected, allowing the viewer to create their own interpretations.

Her work is built in many stages over a long period of time. Applying multiple layers of paint she scumbles, blends and glazes on the canvas, as well as scraping and sanding to reveal beautiful and extraordinary nuances of colour and texture. Expressive line and shape are both utilized to create exciting, thought provoking and compositionally interesting work.

Beyond the merely decorative, her paintings are deeply thoughtful and imbued with multiple layers of interpretation revealing themselves over time. They are meant to last a lifetime.

Joan Skeet graduated ‘with distinction’ from Okanagan University’s diploma Visual Arts program. With scholarships she went on to further her studies at Emily Carr School of Art and Design where she graduated with top marks majoring in both Painting and Sculpture.

A professional, award winning artist, Joan has participated in over fifty group and solo exhibitions. She juries Public Art Exhibitions, and is a sought-after workshop teacher.

Living in both the country and the city, her work combines rural influences with an edgy, urban sophistication.

“My interest lies in creating each painting as a brand new story using colour, line and form. I like to be a traveller in my paintings, going to unexplored places, inviting the viewer to come with me…”
